Jacuzzi whirlpool bath beginnings

Few people are aware that the whirlpool bath tub technology many enjoy in their homes today began with the production of aircraft propellers in the early 1900s. The company that later spawned sophisticated bathing apparatus began in about 1915 as an aircraft propeller and pump design and manufacturing company founded by seven Italian brothers named Jacuzzi. Whirlpool bath pumps were an extension of the aircraft technology.

In 1948, when the 15-month-old son of one of the brothers contracted rheumatoid arthritis, the company began the manufacture and marketing of submersible pumps for use in hydrotherapy to treat a number of physical ailments. (That son, Kenneth, later headed up the company.)

The pump the brothers created was small and portable enough to be used in homes or hospitals. In fact, medical professionals around the country promptly seized upon this new technology by using it in physical therapy and orthopedics and even prescribed the pumps for home use. The pumps gained popularity in Hollywood in the 1940s and the recreational use of the massaging air jets of the Jacuzzi whirlpool bath has been popular for home use ever since.

The company's first outdoor hot tub was created in the late 1960s.
